Lower Yahara River Trail Bike Ride

Cost: $25 (same cost with bike rental or bringing own bike)
Level: Beginner
Maximum Size: 20 attendees

Description:

Incorporated into the Offsite Day on the last day of ITS, attendees will bike from WGL Lake Farm County Park to Babcock County Park along the Lower Yahara River Trail. This paved off-road trail includes the longest inland boardwalk bridge constructed solely for non-motorized transportation in North America! The mile-long bridge spans Lake Waubesa, connecting the Capital City Trail with McDaniel Park in the Village of McFarland. Once in McFarland, the group will continue using on-road trail segments before ending at Babcock County Park. Stops along the way will discuss the trail planning and design, construction and community impact. Trail surface is all paved or boardwalk. Accessible bike may be available for participants who request one in advance (would be requested from one of our partners Access Ability Wisconsin). Transportation pickup/drop off at Monona Terrace Convention Center outside main doors (4th floor). If bringing your bike, you must provide your own transportation to the workshop’s starting location – we suggest you ride your bike to the field trip starting location – which is a 5 mile ride (will take approximately 30 minutes) on the Capital City Trail. Directions will be sent to you via email by the field trip organizer in advance.

IF BRINGING YOUR BIKE: Please enter MYBIKE00 as the discount code during checkout. This will not adjust the cost, but it will note that you are bringing your own bike versus renting one.

PLEASE NOTE: Times noted included transportation to and from location noted above. Start time is when transportation intends to depart and the end time is when attendees are expected to arrive back by. Please arrive at requested location 15 minutes before start time to check-in.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn about the Lower Yahara River Trail design and construction timeline, lessons learned and outcomes of this major capital improvement project that can be applied to trails in their own communities.

  • Participants will learn about Dane County Parks bicycle education programs, which includes maintaining a fleet of adult and youth bikes. Before leaving for the field trip, each participant will be fit to a bicycle and helmet.

  • Participants will learn about the rules of the road and bike path etiquette while getting a chance to practice while biking throughout the field trip.
